Hey Tim, I've come across some information on the web regarding 3rd party programs that you can install on TomToms. For example there is a program called Suntime which changes the display to day/night depending on the time. I suppose it would be somewhat useful for the TomTom one. I've also seen another program that allows you to record/track routes among many other things. Do you follow those type of programs at all or know more about them? If yes, do you know if there is one that emulates the trip feature of the garmin devices, showing average speeds/max speeds, moving average etc.? Without an extra program your TomTom can display these informations: 1- Direction & distance of the next turn 2- Distance remaining to go 3- Time remaining 3- Current time 4- estimate time of arrival 5- Current speed If that's not enough for you then get a program named TripMaster on Webazar.org.
There are so many programs written for TomTom, both legal & illegal - and from all corners of the world (Great britain, Germany, Italy, France, Spain.). I'll second the Tripmaster recommendation, which provides some great additional features to your TomTom. One feature that I am really glad to get back is the ability to capture a log of my travels to import into Street Atlas USA (or similar) to make a map of where we've been. Tripmaster offers that function, as does another program from Webazar.org, which saves the NMEA sentences to a log file. Tripmaster also has a very nice speed-limit option, where you tell it what maximum speed you want to travel and it will beep and/or provide a big visual warning when you exceed that limit. The TomTom HOME software makes it really easy to install 3rd party apps. Note that one should always backup before installing any non-TomTom apps, just in case.
The Tripmaster XML API also allows Tripmaster applications to be displayed and integrated with third-party software applications (e.g., proof of delivery, point of sale, dispatch) on a single. TomTom Software&Tools, Page 2 - TomTom Software,Patches, Utilities, Tools, unlockers etc.
The biggest problem I've had with 3rd party TomTom applications is finding them on the web. I've yet to find anything close to a comprehensive listing, and google searches turn up a huge number of not-quite-what-I-wanted links. I have downloaded and installed 'Tripmaster', 'Offroad' and 'NMEAlogger' from the site. I'm also looking at Tyre from but I have not yet installed it. One somewhat active forum focused on 3rd party TomTom stuff is.
It would be a great help if other who are making use of third party software on their TomTom units would provide some further links in this thread.
